And they are... Netscape first released their own browsers, which were the best until 4.0; from that point, Internet Explorer kicked Netscape's ass (every Netscape 4.x sux0red in everything from speed to stability), plus IE was "free" (comes with Windows) and Netscape was a separate product which just couldn't survive. Netscape skipped the 5.x generation, and worked on server applications. Much later, AOL bought Netscape, and since they wanted an alternative browser to IE, but no company is going to do that for free, they released the Netscape source code to the open source community and created Mozilla.org, an organization to develop this browser.
Mozilla.org began releasing browsers every few months, and once they got good enough, AOL took a couple versions and named them "Netscape", used the same logos and bundled it with AIM, Java, and other stuff, to provide a full Internet package mainly for their customers. Netscape 7.1 was the same as Mozilla 1.4; however, it was easier to install and had less trouble with this or that, also coming with pre-installed plugins.
However, AOL doesn't seem interested on releasing more Netscapes. Mozilla 1.5 and 1.6 have been released after NS7.1, and they are basically newer versions of the same browser. That's why I'm switching to Mozilla and recommending them.
